Microsuction ear wax removal
Ear wax protects the ear canal, but too much of it can cause hearing loss, discomfort, blockage and infection. Microsuction is the modern way to remove it.
What microsuction is
At Clear Ear Clinic we use microsuction: an operating microscope, the same kind used in ear surgery, and a fine sterile suction instrument to remove wax under direct vision at low pressure. Because we can see the ear canal clearly throughout, the procedure is controlled and precise. Most patients tell us they find it more comfortable than syringing.
Why not syringing
The traditional method of removing wax is to syringe the ear with water. It works, but it is a blind procedure: the wax cannot be seen as it is removed, and water is introduced into the ear canal, which can lead to infection. Microsuction uses no water and is carried out under direct vision, which is why it suits ears that should not be syringed, including those with a perforated eardrum or a history of infection.
Am I suitable?
We begin with an assessment of your ears, a nominal £25 that is included in the treatment price if we go on to treat you. If there is no wax to remove, or if we cannot help, you pay only the £25 assessment fee, and we are happy to give ear care advice if your problem turns out to be something other than wax.
Microsuction is safe for children who can stay still during the procedure, usually from about eight years of age, though we have removed wax in children of all ages.
Is there any risk?
Microsuction is widely regarded as a safe and effective way to remove ear wax. As with any medical procedure there are some risks, and we will discuss these with you at your appointment before we begin.
Aftercare
In most cases you will not need any treatment or special precautions afterwards. You can swim and fly as normal immediately after the procedure.
What to expect
Most appointments take about fifteen minutes. It is rare to need more than one visit. You will be seen by an experienced practitioner, and the clinic is led by Mr Simon Gane, Consultant ENT Surgeon.
